Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso: art picnic and exhibition tour

On the 16th of September we will head to the Luxembourg Museum for the unique exhibition "Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso - The Invention of Language". It is dedicated to the story of the extraordinary friendship between two icons of the 20th century - Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein.

Before the exhibition, we will have an art picnic in the Luxembourg Garden, where we will learn more about the artist and the writer, their friendship and creativity, which laid the foundations of Cubism, the pictorial and literary avant-garde of the 20th century.

Event’s program

We will start our meeting with an art picnic* in the Luxembourg Garden, where art historian Boris Klyushnikov will tell us why a Jewish immigrant, writer, poet and aesthete, befriended a young unknown Spanish artist, how they were influenced by Cézanne's work, how did Stein relate literature with Cubist revolution, and how her image inspired Picasso's first Cubist works.

You will find out why literature and art came together so closely during the revolutionary period, and how both geniuses influenced the development of modern art.

After the lecture, we will join Boris for an exhibition where we will see a whole cross-section of the century through art, poetry, music and theatre, through key figures such as Henri Matisse, Juan Gris, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Roni Horn, Hanne Darboven, Glenn Ligon, John Cage, Steve Reich, Bob Wilson and Philip Glass.

*In case of bad weather, the picnic will be moved to the café.
