It seems that in the era of iPhones, Instagram and digital technology, photography as an art form has a risk of depreciation.
We often get lost trying to understand whether a photo that we see is a piece of art? What if it looks just like someone's family chronicle? What distinguishes an amateur photo from a professional one?
On this event that will start with lecture followed by curated tour to Circulation(s) photo festival we will try to find the answers to these questions.
You will learn about the main stages of photography’s development, its technical features, tools and languages as well as the important ideas of the philosophers, photographers and art theoreticians (Stephen Shore, Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin and others). You will also get a brief overview of the photo festivals with a special focus on Circulation(s).
Theoretical framework together with practical exploration will allow you to shift to the new level of photography’s perception and understanding.
Since 2011 CIRCULATION(S) questions territories, trends and issues of our time through the eyes of the European emerging photographers.
This year, the festival comes back for its 13th edition with a program that reveals the vitality, creativity and diversity presenting the work of 27 photographers of 14 nationalities.
The artists will reflect on such issues as socio-economic tensions, environmental disasters, overcoming trauma, domestic violence, refugees and more.
The festival takes place in Le CENTQUATRE-PARIS - a unique cultural center away from the city center where the spirit of freedom, creativity and constant experiment flourishes.
During the curated tour we will see all the festival’s projects with the guide’s comments, explanations and insights.
We will meet in Café Caché situated in #104Paris for the lecture of our expert guide Oksana (40-45 min).
We will proceed with visiting the exhibition’s projects (40-45 min).
In the end we will return to the cafe for a Q&A session with Oksana to process what we have seen and to get some more insights.
After the event feel free to explore more of the festival on your own.
